Uyghurs Commemorate Baren Uprising
Uyghurs and sympathetic protesters gathered in Washington, Istanbul, and Munich to remember the 1990 uprising in Xinjiang triggered by China’s forced abortions and sterilizations on Uyghur women. The death toll from the Baren uprising, suppressed by Chinese troops, ranges from a few dozen to potentially 3,000, as reported by the World Uyghur Congress. The lack of a public investigation by Chinese authorities leaves the actual casualty count unknown, as pointed out by Human Rights Watch.
Repression and Crackdown
The rebellion, which started on April 4, 1990, saw over 200 Uyghurs attempting to break into a local government office in Baren. In response, over 18,000 Chinese troops were dispatched to quell the protests, resulting in an unknown number of casualties. This event marked the beginning of increased Chinese repression against the Uyghurs, now numbering around 11 million, ultimately leading to allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity.
International Protests and Calls for Justice
Protests were also held in Berlin, Munich, Istanbul, and Ankara, among other locations, to mark the 34th anniversary of the Baren Massacre. Demonstrators voiced demands for an end to the Uyghur genocide, highlighting the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Uyghur Muslims during Ramadan. Advocates urged the international community to hold accountable those responsible for the ongoing human rights violations against the Uyghurs.
