5,000 people from Myanmar fled to China due to fighting and are now facing food and water shortages. Fighting cut off aid to the displaced.

5,000 Myanmar Nationals Flee to China, Face Shortages

Some 5,000 Myanmar nationals, including hundreds of children, fled to Yunnan province in China amid an ethnic army offensive in northern Shan state. They are in dire need of food and water, according to the displaced and their family members. This crisis situation came about after the Northern Alliance launched “Operation 1027,” a joint offensive by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Arakan Army, and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.

Water Shortage

The displaced are currently sheltering at a former COVID-19 testing center in Yunnan’s Mengding township. They are suffering from a shortage of supplies, including food and water. Additionally, they mentioned that the Chinese authorities are not allowing donations, and the limited available food is of poor quality.

Scant and Poor Food

In addition to restrictions on receiving donations, Ko Sai and Htoo Htoo reported that they are not allowed to cook their own food. The situation is dire as sanitary napkins are difficult to get, and efforts to receive aid from authorities have been met with resistance. The displaced people are appealing for support from authorities to address the food and water shortages or allow them to move back to a refugee camp in Shan state’s Nam Thit town.
