Cynthia Wu, the running mate for transplant surgeon Ko Wen-je in Taiwan’s presidential election, shares her vision for Taiwan while discussing her background and past political gaffes in an interview.

Introduction of Cynthia Wu

Shin Kong heiress and Taiwan People’s Party vice-presidential nominee, Cynthia Wu, delivered a brief acceptance speech when she was announced as the running mate for a transplant surgeon Ko Wen-je in next month’s election. However, in a recent interview, she switched easily among Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English and shared her experiences on the campaign trail and her vision for Taiwan’s future.

Business Princess to Political Figure

Wu, previously known as an appointed member of the self-governing island’s Legislative Yuan and the granddaughter of Wu Ho-su, appears to be an unlikely political figure due to her background as a business heir. However, she holds a double major in international relations and art history, a master’s degree in literature, and has held various executive posts in Shin Kong subsidiaries. Her unexpected nomination surprised her and others, but she has embraced her new role.

Views on Chinese Influence and Cross-Strait Relations

Wu has faced criticism regarding her alleged involvement with Chinese influence but has strongly endorsed Taiwan’s democratic life and maintains that Taiwan must maintain its peaceful and independent life. In terms of cross-strait relations, Wu has echoed Ko’s stance that peace across the Taiwan Strait is the best guarantee of the status quo. She also expressed the importance of clarifying definitions in the 1992 Consensus and the need for communication and discussion with China.
