False claim circulating in Chinese posts that Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen sent women to entertain British Conservatives in Taiwan. Video shows a company party, not a political event. Governemtn officials do not match the man.
False Claim About Entertainment for British Conservative Party
A video circulating on social media, showing scantily-clad women dancing around a man, was falsely claimed to be entertainment by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen for members of the British Conservative Party. However, this is not true. The video actually depicts a party thrown by a Taiwanese company at the beginning of the 2023 Chinese New Year. Furthermore, a review of official British dignitaries to Taiwan over the past two years did not reveal anyone matching the man in the video.
Debunking the False Claim
The video was initially shared on X (formerly Twitter) with the misleading claim about President Tsai. Subsequently, it was discovered that the event in the video featured traditional Chinese characters predominantly used in Taiwan, as well as people speaking Mandarin with a Taiwanese accent. This led to the conclusion that the video actually captured a Taiwanese company party.
No Credible Evidence of President Tsai’s Involvement
Detailed scrutiny of President Tsai’s engagements with U.K. officials over the past two years revealed no match to the man seen in the video. Numerous meetings were held, including those with Minister of State for Trade Policy Greg Hands, the British-Taiwanese All-Party Parliamentary Group, and Lord Faulkner of Worcester. As such, no credible evidence has been found to support the false claim.
